Do you know where the expression ‘pearl clutching’ comes from? You’ll never guess.

In the ancient and most secret language of vets, ‘pearls’ are objects which animals swallow that they shouldn’t. The traditional way of being sure that an object has not remained lodged in an animal is to investigate its excrement. So if you clutch a pearl as you dig through the poo, you have achieved great success, but must also confront the truth of the task you have just performed. Hence the sense of outrage, protest, and disgust.
